Our Story

After over 20 years in the brewing industry in some form or another, Andy Wilson decided that it was time he opened his own brewery. Together with some good friends, who had just as much history in the trade as Andy, they started to plan how and where to open a brewery.

Work began on White Horse Brewery in the summer of 2004, on a site in Stanford-in-the-Vale, in the Vale of the White Horse.  He wanted to be as close as possible to the White Horse Hill, so this was clearly the best place.  After three months of hard work, they were ready to start brewing.  The first brew took place in October 2004. The first beers to be brewed were White Horse Bitter, Village Idiot and Wayland Smithy, which are so popular today that they are still brewed.

The brewery took off at full gallop and a regular customer base was established in the local area and through Andy’s connections in the brewing industry, he was able to distribute White Horse Beers further afield via Wholesalers and other brewers.

In 2008, the Royal Blenheim was acquired on St Ebbes Street in the heart of Oxford. Serving as the brewery tap, this is the perfect place to sample the full range of White Horse Beers as well as ever rotating guest ales from other brewers around the country.

After running the brewery for 14 years, sometimes working 7 days a week, Andy decided that it was time for him to retire from the brewing industry.  He is still a shareholder in the brewery and a great source of help and knowledge.

In September 2018, Anneli Baxter took over from Andy in the running of White Horse Brewery, coming from Titanic Brewery in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire where she had been employed for 14 years.

Meet The Team

Anneli Baxter

Doesn’t Really Do Titles

Anneli joined White Horse Brewery in September 2018, after being employed under a variety roles at Titanic Brewery in Staffordshire for 14 years. Prior to life at Titanic Brewery, Anneli helped to run a family wholesale business, MWS Wholesale, based in Stoke on Trent.

Anneli is currently studying for a BA Hons Degree in Professional Management alongside her role at White Horse, so spare time is limited. If she does get spare time, she enjoys ‘product development research’, shopping for shoes, spending time with her 21-year-old daughter Ellie and watching Rugby. She is a keen Leicester Tigers fan.

Anneli has recently been elected as a SIBA Regional Director for the Midlands Region.

Alex Timms

In 2016, bored with the everyday thrills of selling paint, Alex joined White Horse Brewery as an assistant brewer. To make sure that White Horse keeps up with current trends, Alex dedicates a significant amount of his spare time to ‘Market Research’ at beer festivals and quality drinking establishments across the country. What’s left is given to Netflix and/or Playstation. He’s a simple creature!

Gav Stanton

Gav is Anneli’s other half and joined White Horse Brewery in May 2018 after also working at Titanic Brewery for 14 years. Gav’s first role at Titanic Brewery was as Brewery Labourer, but his interest in brewing led him to join the brewing team as Assistant Brewer.

Not content with brewing all week, Gav converts the kitchen at home to a brewery on a Saturday morning, experimenting with new ingredients and styles of beer. He has plans to convert an outside brick built store at home into a brewery – Anneli will be relieved to have her kitchen back once this has been done!

When not brewing, Gav also enjoys ‘product development research’ and is a self-confessed gaming geek.

Telesales & Admin

Originally from Australia (if you’ve spoken to Kirsten on the phone, you might have guessed!). Kirsten has been living in the UK for 12 years and has been with White Horse Brewery since 2017.

Prior to moving here she’s had 20 years working in customer service and sales. In her spare time she loves gardening, restoring furniture and admiring classic cars. When on holidays (here and abroad) a vast amount of time is spent on “product research” generally in the form of Breweries, Wineries and Distilleries!
